With the end of the year fast approaching, (I know, sorry!) the countdown to submitting your CPD is on. We know this can be a busy and stressful time of year, and that the last thing you need on top of a hectic work schedule and a long Christmas shopping list is a last-minute scramble to hit that submit button. So we are here to help!

Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is an important aspect of your job and our industry. Not only does it need to be completed for you to remain compliant with Central Bank of Ireland regulations, but it should also be something you are committed to for your career progression.

First things first, an important note, you need to complete, record and submit all required CPD hours by 31 December. This means that even if you have logged everything already, you still have to click the submit button yourself.

Have you completed at least 15 hours?

If you hold an insurance designation (e.g. APA, CIP, MDI) or if you are a Grandfathered Person, you need to complete at least 15 hours of relevant CPD content every year.

It’s important to make sure that these 15 hours are appropriate for the designation you hold or the function you fulfil at work. However, 15 is just the minimum, so it is always a good idea to look at other options to help broaden your knowledge base and expand your opportunities.

If you hold an Advanced Diploma in Insurance (ACII) or Fellowship of the CII (FCII), your requirement is to complete 35 hours of CPD in a 12-month period.

Learn more on the Chartered Insurance Institute’s website.

Have you completed an hour of ethics?

As an industry committed to protecting people when they need it most, we must be ethical in our work and ensure we always put the customer first. As a result, at least one of your 15 hours of CPD must relate to ethics.

We always provide multiple ways for you to achieve this throughout the year, including webinars and eLearning modules. Just look out for the ethics symbol in the description.

Have you completed one hour related to the function you fulfil?

The Minimum Competency Code 2017 (MCC 2017) requires you to complete at least one hour per function you fulfil within your 15 hour requirement. Learn more about specified functions here.

For example, if you work in personal lines claims, at least one hour of the content you complete should relate to this product area – although we recommend you complete more than this to really get the most out of your CPD.

Have you recorded everything?

If you attended any of our CPD Series webinars or completed any of our eLearning modules, we'll add this activity to your online CPD record automatically.

However, if your employer has held an in-house CPD session or if you attended other industry events that were accredited by The Insurance Institute, you will need to add this to your record yourself, along with evidence of attendance or completion.

Have you clicked submit?

Once you’ve completed and recorded your CPD hours, you need to log into your member area and click submit. Remember, you won’t be deemed compliant until you do this, so please don’t skip this step!
